Public Screen Multiplayer Video Games

Which design decisions meet the challenges posed by the development of video games for public screens?

Smartphones have brought video games for everyone into public space. Although the Internet or Bluetooth enable multiplayer games, most participants using these interfaces remain focused on their own devices. Thus games appear separated from their surroundings. “Public Screen Multiplayer Video Games” (PSMPGs) bring games into the public sphere by visualising them on big screens. Players control their avatars via smartphone, which serves only as input device. Continuously running games are open to any and all players. The special characteristics of these games imply challenges for the design process, and these are considered in this work.
