Screen Space — Typology of unusual rooms in game design

How are unusual rooms used in digital games and game design? To what extent can screen space rendering be used for innovative game mechanics and visualisations?

This paper analyzes video games with unusual digital rooms that stand out from the everyday perception of the viewer. The research results in a typology of games and their game mechanics, and demonstrates how the characteristics of rooms and the actions of players are used as game mechanics. It also discusses how mathematical models, digital and illusory tricks are applied to create unusual rooms.

A digital prototype serves to show how such room mechanics can function as tools for game design. The spatial and visual effect of screen space rendering serves as the basis for the development of a new game mechanic and innovative visual appearance.
